David Byrne is Head of Knowledge Management for BT Legal. Working with a team of 130 lawyers, he faces a common challenge: how to increase productivity without increasing resources? Or, as he puts it, “finding ways for our people to do more with less effort.”
With a distributed workforce, BT Legal relies on versatile technology to substitute for face-to-face contact. The need for that versatility was a key factor that led to the company becoming one of the first to adopt Linex Smart Alerts.

Monitoring multiple sources
At BT they see Linex Smart Alerts as an important business tool: “We use it to share knowledge and work together. The system allows the company to monitor content from its panel of law firms, as well as tracking information from thousands of other sources."
Full Integration
Many of the company’s lawyers use Linex Smart Alerts daily, without realising it. This is because BT has integrated the system closely with its own SharePoint site. Information appears there directly, so lawyers do not have to log in to Linex themselves.
Smart but simple
Was this complicated to set up? "Not at all", according to David. “Getting started was very straightforward. It was very easy and the admin panel is simple to use.”
David has also been impressed by the level of service. “The team at Linex are very easy to work with and interested in new ideas and trying new things too. That makes it easier for us.”
As to the final question: does it work? Well, yes. But David's succinct explanation is better: “We haven’t got great bundles of money to do things, so we’re having to be as smart as we can. Linex enables us to work in smarter ways.”
